The power steering system plays a significant role in the ease and maneuverability of your vehicle. Acting as a direct connection between your steering wheel and the wheels on your car, the hydraulic system adds energy that augments steering effort for the driver. With the power steering system requiring hydraulic pressure, either by a gerotor or rotary vane pump, it can be dependent on fluid flow between the fluid reservoir and the driven pump. 

Over time, problems with your power steering system can become noticeable and cause strain for the driver. Some of the common issues include:

Power Steering Leak: With fluid being moved between valves, pumps, and your steering mechanism, any type of leak can cause issues with your system. The appearance of fluid will show on the driver’s side of the vehicle, along with a grinding sound during any maneuvers with the car. 

Drive Belt Slipping: Within the hydraulic system itself, there is a belt that helps run the pumps. If the belt becomes worn or starts to slip away from the system, a loud squealing noise will be clear during any turns. 

Crack/Worn Hoses: Due to its proximity to your car’s engine, the hoses in the power steering system can contact the engine bay. This can cause damage to the hoses making them worn or even crack. If you notice a sudden loss of pressure and the need for more effort when steering, the hoses may be called into question.
